The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) is responsible for producing and approving textbooks for the new curriculum in Uganda. These books are designed to support the shift from content-based to competency-based learning, enabling students to develop problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Each subject now has learner’s books and teacher’s guides that emphasize real-life examples, scenarios, and projects. For instance, Science books contain experiment-based tasks, while English books encourage students to write, discuss, and present ideas.
The books promote active learning. Instead of memorization, students engage with activities that build creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. NCDC ensures every book aligns with these competencies.
The Ministry of Education distributes these books to schools across Uganda. However, due to supply delays, some institutions struggle to get enough copies. Shuleni bridges this gap by allowing teachers to upload and access digital versions of learning materials within the system.
Using outdated books confuses learners and teachers. NCDC frequently updates the content to match revised syllabi and competency targets. Schools should always verify book editions before purchasing or distributing them.
